"We Have Always Lived in the Castle". We Have Always Lived in the Castle is a great book and now that I've read it I can see why it's considered a modern classic. After reading The Haunting of Hill House, I was keen to read more Shirley Jackson and spook myself silly. But alas, all things must come to an end, and what an interesting end We Have Always Lived in the Castle has come to. Based on the unsolved 1947 disappearance of Bennington College student Paula Jean Welden, is as scary as The Haunting of Hill House, as chilling as “The Lottery,” and as weird as We Have Always Lived in the Castle. We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson. This book was categorized under horror. It was the perfect atmosphere for the book. Either I don't know the correct meaning of horror or it really isn't horror. We Have Always Lived in the Castle was the last book Jackson published before she died (somewhat tragically) three years later in 1965. Did anyone find the ending anti-climatic? Although, It is definitely eerie and surprisingly startling. I read We Have Always Lived in the Castle on an autumnal Saturday evening, with candles lighted, on the couch cuddled under a blanket, and accompanied with a cup of tea.
